1889
Thomas Shaw escaped from slavery during the Civil War and fought for the Union. After the War he joined the cavalry and served on the western frontier where, during the Apache Wars in 1881, he received the coveted Medal of Honor. He is shown in the northern plains during the cold winter of 1889. Sgt. Shaw is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
