Historical scenes and persons require many months, and sometimes years, of research before any paint is put to canvas. This genre of painting is by far the most time consuming of the many fields of painting an artist can choose to do. It requires not only a high level of skill in realistic painting and a knowledge of history, but an understanding of uniforms and costume, weapons, tactics, and all the myriad other subjects that a particular historic scene might require knowlege of. Researchers and experts often must be consulted, as the smallest of details, such as the direction of the wind at the time of the scene, are often necessary.
