DONNA J. NEARY's exceptional and wide-ranging talent has allowed her to move easily between painting book and magazine covers, portraits, military art, commercial illustration, children’s books, and complex historical paintings.
The artist’s paintings have graced the covers of well over 150 books and magazines including The Washington Post Magazine, The New Republic, the Naval Institute’s Proceedings, Common Cause magazine, 25 covers of the Marine Corps Gazette, award-winning covers for both Regardie’s and Mortgage Banking Magazines, numerous history books and children’s book covers, as well as several record jackets, cassettes, and CD covers.
Illustrations by D. J. Neary appear in Time-Life Book’s Enchanted World book series and their popular Civil War book set Echoes of Glory, Boston Publishing’s Vietnam Experience series, and numerous history books. Her art has illustrated articles in Washingtonian Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, America’s Civil War, Military Heritage magazine, and many other periodicals.
The 1994 Official White House Christmas Ornament displays a painting by Donna J. Neary, and her Civil War painting entitled “Even To Hell Itself” is the official painting for the North Anna Battlefield Park, near Richmond, Virginia. Her paintings were featured on the posters and program covers of the 2003, 2005, and the 2012 Hamilton International Tattoo in Ontario, Canada, and a number of her highly researched historical paintings have been published as limited edition prints.
The artist also served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves as a combat artist for 24 years, receiving the Colonel John W. Thomason, Jr. Award, the Combat Correspondent’s Distinguished Performance Award, and Navy Commendation Medal with star. Among her many assignments were those that sent her to the field in the remote mountains of South Korea, several assignments north of the Arctic Circle, and in 1993, to civil-war torn Somalia on the Horn of Africa. Her art from that assignment was included in an exhibit in the Rotunda of the U.S. Senate Office Building in Washington D.C. soon after her return from that devastated country. The artist has approximately 100 works of art in the Art Collection of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Paintings by Ms. Neary hang in the Pentagon and the Commandant’s House in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Cavalry Museum at Ft. Riley, Kansas, The U.S. Army Medical Museum at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, The National Museum of the Marine Corps near Quantico, Virginia, and reside in the collections of The National Guard Bureau, The National Park Service, the Scots Guards, the Queen’s Own Highlanders, Regardie’s Magazine, The Marine Corps Association, the U.S. Marine Corps Art Collection, and other public and private Collections in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. From January 2012 to January 2013 two artworks by the artist hung in the National Air & Space Museum as part of the the "150 Years of Marine Corps Aviation" exhibit.
Throughout the mid-1970s and early 1980s the artist maintained her studio at the renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. She currently lives and maintains her studio in a restored schoolhouse located in the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley.
